Wind, rough surf on the Vineyard as Irene moves north - Local News - Boston, MA on Astini News

& MARTHA'S VINEYARD, Mass. -- As Tropical Storm Irene moved north, high winds and choppy seas rolled ashore on Martha's Vineyard Sunday. &

Waves were so large at South Beach they washed over the beach onto the road that leads up to the beach, flooding them. They storm surge also put the Edgartown Yacht Club under water.

As the Sunday went on, water continued to crash over the seawalls spilling on the streets. A lot of wind was felt on the island, but there wasn't much rain.

"It's windy and exciting and everyone likes a good hurricane," said Maureen Marlowe.

Although it was a struggle for folks to keep their balance in the strong winds and stay dry, eager storm watchers just had to experience it firsthand.

"It's so much fun though…I mean, as long as we keep out of harm's way it's great," said Mary Kay Kitteridge.

But no one enjoyed it more than one couple who got married on a Vineyard beach Saturday night, and were having a hurricane honeymoon.

"We're just enjoying the storm. We're going to hunker down, ride it out and just have fun," said Darcy Reil, newlywed.

"We decided that no matter what we were going to do it this weekend and there was no holding us back," said Darcy's husband.

Ferry service was suspended at Oak Bluffs on the sound side of the island because of the rough seas caused by the storm.

Ferry service will resume on Monday.
