Grizzly bear killed near Red Lodge after cattle attacks on Astini News

BILLINGS - Wildlife agents have euthanized a 400-pound grizzly bear captured near Red Lodge after it was caught attacking livestock for the second time in four years.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks biologist Shawn Stewart said Tuesday that the bear was caught by federal wildlife officials after it killed cattle in a rancher's pasture.

The male bear had been captured in 2007 north of Cody, Wyo., following cattle attacks in that area. It was relocated to Dubois, Wyo. and fitted with a microchip to track its movements. Officials say that this year the bear apparently traveled north through the Yellowstone National Park area and into Montana.

Because the bear was a two-time offender, officials determined there was no place it could be safely released without risking further attacks on livestock.
