Fernando Torres gets backing of Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas after horror miss against Manchester United on Astini News

"You have to be fair that the best world strikers missed great opportunities," he said. "It happened to Fernando but it happened to Rooney, too. The worst things happen to the best strikers in the world and today it happened to both of them."

"You are all very nice in here with me and tomorrow you take a different stance," he added.

After his side's victory, Sir Alex Ferguson accused Ashley Cole of a "shocking and reckless tackle" on Javier Hernandez who was forced off as a result of the second-half challenge.

While it remains to be seen how long the Mexican will be sidelined for, Ferguson said: "It was a shocking tackle. The referee booked him, so I don't understand why he hasn't given a penalty.

"Ashley Cole is very reckless at times. He is committed of course but being committed you can sometimes go over the edge a bit. That was an example of that."

Villas-Boas however has defended the England left-back and claimed he might not have launched into a nasty tackle on Hernandez if the officials had got earlier decisions right at Old Trafford.

"Maybe he wouldn't get sent off if the linesman does his work," said Villas-Boas. "He would have been less emotionally drained. I work the other way round. You are trying to say the referee did something wrong. I cannot forget the previous two.

"If it was 0-0 maybe Ashley is a little bit more mentally in control of the situation and doesn't do the red card foul that you mention."
