Adobe Systems Inc. has launched major updates for its Flash Player and AIR platforms with some enhancements expected to greatly benefit Mac OS and iOS developers.

According to Adobe, this release includes new features as well as enhancements and bug fixes related to security, stability, performance, and device compatibility.

Stage3D performance on Mac OS X has been improved. In some cases it's up to two times better, according to the technicians behind Flash and AIR.

The software still has issues though, as noted in the changelog. For example, hardware accelerated rendering is not supported on Intel GMA, ATI Radeon x1600, and ATI Radeon 2400 cards on Mac OS X.

Flash Player 11 now takes advantage of native support for 64-bit operating systems and 64-bit web browsers on Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux. Tons of other changes and enhancements are listed.

Moving onto the new features in Adobe AIR 3, the platform adds native extension libraries that allow the code savvy types to create and use ActionScript libraries implemented with native code.

According to Adobe, "These libraries allow ActionScript developers to take advantage of the same platform- and device- specific native capabilities and APIs available to native apps, with easy integration into AIR applications."

A popular feature from AIR for iOS, Captive Runtime Support, is now available with AIR for desktop and Android.

Front-facing Camera Support, also previously available for Apple platforms, is now enabled for devs coding for Android platforms, including tablets.

A new Camera Position API delivers "a new property for the Camera class that enables developers to determine whether a camera is front or rear facing."

Background Audio Playback is now supported on iOS, meaning that "Developers can now write multitasking iOS applications that can play audio while in the background, such as music applications or reliable voice conferencing apps with multitasking support," as the folks at Adobe themselves explain.

Finally, among the most noteworthy additions, AIR 3 has Encrypted Local Storage for Mobile.

This enhancement lets apps store sensitive data on a user's device ensuring the security of the data, whether it's passwords, certificates, or auditing info the app is supposed to handle.

Both the Flash Player update and the AIR update have been strengthened from a security standpoint as well. More information is available in the security bulletins posted by Adobe in the release notes.
