Day of Rage: Social media-driven 'occupation' slowly builds attention on Astini News

A social media-driven campaign whose organizers hoped to draw 20,000 people to New York's financial district for a Saturday protest didn't meet it's mark, but slowly began to attract mainstream media attention by the weekend's close.

ABC News reported Sunday night that the crowd peaked at around 5,000 on Saturday, but those who remained have no plans to leave anytime soon.

But the broadcast network's coverage came after a day of Internet traffic where bloggers like this poster on Muncie Free Press accused the mainstream media of ignoring the group, or conspiring in a news blackout.

Via Facebook pages and Twitter tweets, groups such as Occupy Wall Street and Day of Rage cited dissatisfaction with the U.S. government bailouts of the U.S. financial industry and a financial system the believe favor the rich and powerful over ordinary citizens.

Backers of the effort liken their effort to long-running public protests that have errupted this year in Egypt, Spain and Israel.
